Parent & Toddler Dance Classes Plan: Caterpillar Theme

1. Concept Overview

  • Target Group: Toddlers aged 3 to 5 years, accompanied by parent or carer
  • Setting: Local libraries or community centers, emphasizing accessibility and affordability
  • Theme: The life journey of a caterpillar: eating, growing, forming a cocoon, and emerging as a butterfly
  • Style: Creative movement, sensory play, and storytelling through dance to engage young children and support early development

2. Session Structure & Activities

Warm-Up (5–7 minutes)

  • Simple stretches and gentle movements inspired by nature (e.g., reaching up like leaves, crawling like caterpillars)
  • Encourage parents to join and model the movements

Storytelling & Movement Exploration (15–20 minutes)

  • Introduce the caterpillar’s journey in simple, engaging language
  • Use props like soft scarves or textured fabrics to represent leaves, cocoons, and wings
  • Movement phases:
    • Eating: Crawling on hands and knees, reaching and grabbing imaginary leaves
    • Growing: Stretching and expanding the body, moving bigger and stronger
    • Cocoon: Curling up in a small ball, slow rocking and gentle swaying
    • Butterfly: Flapping arms gently to mimic wings, light bouncing and twirling

Sensory Play Integration

  • Incorporate tactile elements like leaves, feathers, or soft balls for children to explore while moving
  • Use music of varying tempo and volume to match each stage of the journey

Parent & Child Interaction

  • Encourage parents to mirror their child’s movements and provide physical support when needed
  • Include simple partner dances, e.g., holding hands while “fluttering” as butterflies

Cool Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Gentle breathing and stretching
  • Sit in a circle for a short recap of the journey, with parents and children sharing favorite parts or movements

  • 3. Contacting Libraries (Space + Promotion)

    How to Approach:

    • Method: Start with a polite, concise email. Follow up with a phone call if needed.
    • Libraries to Contact: Target local community libraries, for example, Coventry libraries or others nearby.

    What to Ask About:

    • Availability of room hire or free community spaces for weekly sessions
    • Preferred times, ideally weekday mornings to suit parents and toddlers
    • Room capacity and suitability (e.g., floor type safe for toddler movement)

    How to Highlight Benefits:

    • Emphasize how the classes support early years development through movement and storytelling
    • Point out the potential to bring more families into the library, encouraging community engagement
    • Mention connection to a well-known children’s book or popular theme (e.g., the caterpillar journey) to increase appeal

    What to Request:

    • A safe, open space suitable for active toddler movement
    • Optional storage for props or equipment between sessions
    • Assistance with promotion, such as:
      • Displaying posters within the library
      • Sharing via the library’s social media channels
      • Inclusion in the library’s newsletter or community bulletin

4.Promotion (Call-Out)

5. Spotify Playlist Ideas

Search/create a playlist with:

  • Gentle instrumental (piano, lullaby style)
  • Nature sounds (forest, birds)
  • Light upbeat children’s songs
  • Examples:
    • “Baby Bumblebee”
    • Instrumental lullabies
    • Soft acoustic tracks

Keep tracks short (1–2 mins) to match toddler attention spans.
